Balloon Bomb Historical Marker

Along Highway 27, 15 miles north of Ellsworth Nebraska stands this marker commemorating the landing of a Japanese balloon bomb.
At the July 11, 2015 presentation of the marker Kenneth Hamilton told the interesting story of viewing the balloon when he was a young boy He stated that his father went to the air base in Alliance the next day to report the incident and was told to keep it quiet as the defense department did not want the Japanese to know that any balloons reached the country.
In this day when we tell our enemy what day we will withdraw our troops, it is hard to imagine that the public did not hear about these bombs until after the war was over.
